EU-Kiribati Partnership – Building resilience through improved sanitation

Access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene is critical for the health and well-being of children and their families. This is especially true for women and girls and people with disabilities, who have different needs and different priorities with respect to how they use WASH facilities. Poor sanitation, coupled with unsafe water sources and global climate change realities, increases the risk of water-borne disease and illness due to poor hygiene, which subsequently contributes to Kiribati’s disease burden.
As part of the “EU-Kiribati Partnership for a sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development”, this action aims to improve the use of services and goods provided by the public sector with a special focus on water and sanitation in Kiritimati (Christmas) Island.
The intervention has two components focusing on:
- Improving access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene;
- Strengthening community and household resilience for water, sanitation and hygiene.
