EU-Kiribati Partnership - Safe and sustainable drinking water for Kiritimati Island

08.06.2022

The project aims to improve access to safe and sustainable drinking water to the people living on Kiritimati Island.

The remote islands of the Line Islands Group, which comprise fragile atoll ecosystems vulnerable to climate change, are expected to undergo significant population increase, particularly on Kiritimati (Christmas) Island with the release of 2,370 new leases as per national development and internal migration plans.

As part of the “EU-Kiribati Partnership for a sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development”, this action aims to improve the use of services and goods provided by the public sector in relation to water and sanitation on Kiritimati Island. The intervention focuses on:

  • Improving evidence-based management of water resources;
  • Increasing access to safe and reliable drinking water supply; and
  • Strengthening capacity to operate, maintain and manage safe, efficient and accountable water supply systems at the institutional, community and household levels.
