Fighting Against Impunity in Fiji

The project seeks to end impunity for sexual offenses through increased awareness and accountability for human rights violations through a strengthened, functional and supported reporting system. Sexual violence remains a critical challenge in Fiji, impacting the safety, dignity, and well-being of survivors, particularly women and children. Data reveals an increasing number of cases in the last few years with more than half of these cases involving survivors who are children under the age of 17. It was further highlighted that less than 25% of these cases proceed to a court hearing or charge. The 2019 Rape Case Analysis on Sexual Violence Against Women and Girls, indicates that the average duration from the occurrence of an incident to the final judgment is 977 days, or approximately 2.7 years. Due to the court waiting time, often the survivors vanish or change their minds.
