Pacific - EU Waste Management Programme (PacWaste Plus)

The Pacific – EU Waste Management Programme is implemented in 15 countries of the Pacific region to improve and enhance waste management activities as well as to improve the capacity of governments, industries and communities to manage waste in order to reduce the impact on human health and the environment.

The PacWaste Plus programme activities are designed to assist countries to ensure the safe and sustainable management of waste with due regard for the conservation of biodiversity, reduction of marine litter, health and well-being of Pacific island communities, and climate change mitigation and adaptation requirements. The programme aims to deliver outcomes through four main programme delivery areas:

  1. Improved data collection, information sharing, and education and awareness;
  2. Policies and regulatory frameworks developed and implemented;
  3. Implemented best practices, including enhanced private sector engagement and infrastructure development; and
  4. Enhanced Human Capacity.

Pacific island countries benefiting from this six year programme include Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Palau, Tuvalu, Nauru, Niue, Federated States of Micronesia and Timor-Leste.
