Solomon Islands Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project (UWSSSP)

The project will improve access to safe water and improved sanitation in urban and peri-urban areas of Solomon Islands. The population of Solomon Islands is currently estimated at 642,000 and is growing at approximately 1.9% annually. About 152,000 (24%) of the Solomon Islands population live in urban and peri-urban areas, the largest of which is greater Honiara, with an estimated population of about 105,000.

In addition we have foreseen a top-up of this project for water supply and sanitation in the capital city Honiara, as well as other components such as water conservation, sanitation and hygiene awareness and education, institutional strengthening and project management, as well as management of Honiara’s drinking water source area strengthened to build resilience to climate change. The main focus of this action will be the rehabilitation of urban sanitation systems and reconfiguration of the Honiara sewerage system , including the construction of a septage treatment station.
