The European Union (EU) is an economic and political Union between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.
The EU Delegation to the Pacific in Suva works in close coordination with the Embassies and Consulates of the 27 EU Member States. We are a fully-fledged diplomatic mission and represent the European Union in dealings with the Government of Fiji and 12 other Pacific countries in areas that are part of the EU’s remit.
We offer
The post of Press and Information Officer (Local Agent Group I) in the Delegation’s Political, Press and Information Section. The successful candidate will work under the supervision and responsibility of the Head of Political, Press and Information Section, providing strategic communications expertise and support to enhance the European Union’s visibility and public awareness of its activities in Fiji and the Pacific region through effective public diplomacy and media relations.
The Political, Press and Information Section consists of 5 people. Under this post, the recruited person will be assigned duties according to the needs of the Delegation, and any changes in those needs, including occasional atypical working hours.
The following main tasks and duties are currently required, but may evolve according to service needs:
Communication and Visibility

Develop and deliver strategic communication plans, including public diplomacy events and activities, to promote EU interests, values and policies across the Pacific, including in Fiji.

Lead the implementation of communication and visibility initiatives, ensuring effective outreach and engagement.

Draft communications materials, including speeches, press releases, articles, newsletters, and publications, to showcase EU policies and priorities

Manage and maintain the Delegation’s online presence, including the website and social media accounts, to ensure timely, informative, and engaging content that aligns with the Delegation's objectives and priorities.

Provide prompt and accurate responses to external inquiries and information requests.
Planning and Coordination
-
Prepare the Information and Communication Annual Report and Forward Planning.

Lead internal coordination on the Delegation’s public diplomacy, media relations, and strategic communications activities.

Support visibility of EU-funded projects, in close collaboration with the Delegation’s Cooperation Section.

Develop and keep up to date a targeted Communications calendar on the activities and events conducted by the Delegation.
Media Outreach and Relations
-
Conduct daily media monitoring of local and regional press, providing timely and informative press briefings.

Build and maintain a strong network of contacts with local and regional media, influencers, and other key stakeholders to amplify the Delegation’s messages.

Organise press conferences, interviews, and other media engagements, including during missions and events, to promote the Delegation’s activities and initiatives.

Monitor and analyse the media environment in Fiji and the Pacific, including to identify potential vulnerabilities to Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), and inform the development of initiatives strengthening local and regional media resilience.
Administrative and Financial Tasks

Manage the planning, execution, and reporting of Press and Information budget commitments and expenditures, ensuring proper financial management.

Contribute to preparing Terms of Reference, tender documents and contracts for public diplomacy, press, and information services and products.

Coordinate the procurement, inventory, and distribution of promotional materials and publications.
General Responsibilities
-
Perform other tasks assigned by the supervisor or the Head of Delegation according to the needs of the service.

Provide back-up and support to other members of the Section as required.
The base monthly salary will depend on relevant and verified employment experience, typically starting from FJD 7966. There is a competitive benefits package, subject to certain conditions, including personal leave days and public holidays, health insurances and a retirement savings plan.
The expected start date will be as soon as possible, with a fixed-term contract with a duration of two (2) years.
Minimum requirements / eligibility criteria (necessary for the application to be considered)

University degree (Social Sciences, Media, Communication, Information, Public relations, Press, Journalism or other relevant fields)

A minimum of 5 years of work experience in communications after the date of obtaining of the diploma required for this position
-
Familiarity with the Pacific media landscape
-
Ability to manage various social media channels in parallel in a coherent manner
-
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English (C1)
-
Full computer literacy (MS Office suite, power point)
-
Should be in good health and pass medical examination for recruitment

A clean police record and should be able to produce a clearance report when requested.
Assets / selection criteria (basis for awarding points to select the best applicant)

Experience in working in an international/multicultural organisation or foreign mission in Fiji or abroad.

Working knowledge of Fiji's vernacular languages (Fijian – iTaukei and Hindi).

Working knowledge of an additional EU language (e.g. French).

Knowledge and/or experience of EU policies.

Graphic skills.

The process
After the deadline for applications, the eligible applications will be admitted to the Selection by the Committee set up for this purpose.
Depending on the number of applications received, successive phases of Selection may include shortlisting of candidates based on the assessment of the information provided in the motivation letter, CV, written test and interviews. At least, the 5 best candidates will be invited to the final interview.
