African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE) pilot programme -Launch of the call for applications

Within the framework of the EU-AU High-Level Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation, attention is drawn on a pilot programme with particular resonance and focus on youth and the transition to knowledge-based economies.

 

With strategic guidance of the European Union and the African Union, the pilot programme ARISE seeks to boostand further unlock Africa’s potential for innovation by supporting the next generation of African scientific leaders. Funded under the Pan-African Programme with €25 million, it is implemented by the African Academy of Sciences (Nairobi, Kenya) who has launched the call for applications on 18 June 2021. In short, ARISE is the first pilot programme of its kind:

-will promote research in different fields of scientific endeavour taking into account EU-AU joint priorities such as public health and green transition; -will give opportunities to 40 young early career researchers from 40 different African countries(1 scientist per country), selected based on their scientific excellence in a continent-wide open competition;-will give grants of up to €500,000 over a period of five years tosupport successful talents to develop innovative research as well astheir own independent research teams at an African university or research institution.
