The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organizations. Abroad, the EU is represented through 145 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy. 

The EU Delegation to The Gambia works in close coordination with the Embassies and Consulates of the 27 EU Member States. We are a fully-fledged diplomatic mission and represent the European Union in dealings with the Gambian government in areas that are part of the EU’s remit.

We offer

The post of Press and Information Officer (Local Agent Group 1). The team consists of 2 people and there are occasional atypical working hours. Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation, and on the changes of these needs. The successful candidate will serve under the supervision and responsibility of the Political officer/Deputy Head of mission, providing support, expertise and assistance in the area of public information, visibility and political affairs. 

Following main tasks and duties are currently required: 

  • Ensure daily monitoring of local press, both hard copy and on internet, and produce press reviews.
  • Design and support the implementation the communication strategy of the EU Delegation in The Gambia;
  • Maintain and update the Delegation website and social media presence including Twitter and Facebook; 
  • Promote EU Delegation activities internally via the intranet and other internal channels;
  • Prepare proactive EU media activities products including press releases, flash notes, articles, tweets, briefings, interviews, visits; edit publications from colleagues;
  • Manage the Press & Information annual visibility budget of the EU Delegation and report to Headquarters; including preparing tendering procedures and contract management related to press & information activities;
  • Maintain regular contact with EEAS Strategic Communication division and, when relevant, with INTPA communication unit;

  • Upkeep of media contacts including mailing and mobile phone lists; and maintain good and effective contacts with media and journalists; 
  • Organize visibility events such as press conferences, seminars, fairs, and others to further enhance EU visibility in The Gambia;
  • Plan and implement cultural and public diplomacy events and campaigns, including the organization of yearly EU public events (Film Festival, Europe Day/week, etc.); 

  • Support the Cooperation Section with planning visibility activities related to projects and other activities (communication contracts, campaigns…);
  • Contribute to drafting political reporting and others, and to prepare speeches, briefings and speaking points for the Head of Delegation and other staff when relevant;
  • Keep abreast of the latest innovations in digital communications and make suggestions for new ways of promoting work and messages online;
  • Propose answers to any specific question from the public on the role of the EU in The Gambia;
  • Undertake other assignments that may be requested in view of the efficient functioning of the Delegation as required by the Political Officer and/ or Head of Delegation.

Contract period: 2 years, renewable, with a probation period of 6 months

The base salary will depend on relevant and verified employment experience, typically starting from GMD67,995.  There is a competitive benefits package, subject to certain conditions, including personal leave days and public holidays, health insurances and a retirement savings plan. 

 Minimum requirements / eligibility criteria (necessary for the application to be considered)

  • Post secondary diploma in Journalism and/or Communication; 
  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience in performing similar tasks after having received the requested diploma ;
  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken)
  • Advanced proven knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Advance proven knowledge of social media.
  • Right to residence and work in host country;

Assets / selection criteria (basis for awarding points to select the best applicant).

  • Bachelor degree in Journalism, Communication or other related field (law, economy, international relations, political sciences) 
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment;. 
  • Proven ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues and external parties. ("team player”) and respect for hierarchy;
  • Persuasive, resilient, able to handle criticism, able to cope with pressure and meet erratic deadlines;

  • Excellent ability to perform duties with speed and accuracy without immediate and constant supervision; 

  • Very good analytical and writing skills and ability to summarise events from a variety of press and information sources;
  • Results and Solutions oriented: Ability to set priorities and find solutions; 
  • Very good organizational, interpersonal and presentation skills;
  • Ability to clearly and efficiently conceptualize ideas;
  • A high degree of integrity and the ability to deal with confidential information; 

  • Knowledge/experience/interest in  EU policies,  international relations, of inner workings of the host country politics/media/economy;
  • Flexibility on working hours (occasionally).

The process

After the deadline for applications, the eligible applications will be admitted to the Selection by the Committee set up for this purpose.  Depending on the number of applications received, successive phases of Selection may include shortlisting of candidates-based assessment of the information provided in the cover letter, CV [and talent screener], practical testing and interviews. After the tests, the selected candidates will be invited to the final interviews.

Only candidates admitted to each successive selection phase will be contacted individually. The Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this job advertisement to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.
