EU Ambassador attends UN National Conference on Gender Equality

The United Nations Country Team in Georgia in partnership with the government of Georgia  and civil society organisations held a national conference on gender equality.

The aim of the event was to once again demonstrate continuous support to and prioritise gender equality and the empowerment of the women agenda as an integral and critical part of Georgia’s democratic and sustainable development. To realise this priority, it is crucial that the stakeholders, among them groups with different positions, join forces around one aspiration and accelerate societal development through enhancing human rights protection and supporting equality.

The conference was attended by  Mr. Archil Talakvadze, Vice-speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, H.E. Mr. Ulrik Tideström, Ambassador of Sweden to Georgia, H.E. Ms. Kelly C. Degnan, Ambassador of the United States to Georgia, H.E. Mr. Pawel Herczynski, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, H.E. Mr. Mark Clayton, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Georgia, H.E. Ms. Heidi Grau, Ambassador of Swiss Confederation to Georgia, representatives of executive and legislative branches of the government, international and local non-governmental organizations, women’s rights advocates and media.

The conference supported dialogue and discussions on the efforts to enhance women’s participation in politics as well as to eliminate femicide and violence against women in politics. Moreover, the participants of the conference discussed issues of enhancing prevention and response mechanisms to sexual violence against women in times of peace and war, education as the primary medium to combat gender-based discrimination and harmful practices, maternity benefit reform and other issues.

A high-level annual event in the frameworks of the 16 Days of Acticism against Gender-based Violence will be held annually with the participation of state and non-state partners. The National Conference on Gender Equality is an annual concluding high-level event to be held in the scope of the Phase III of the UN joint Programme “For Gender Equality” with the support of Sweden.
