The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Irchad Razaaly, yesterday, 27 September 2021, launched a week-long training for police officers under the Counter-Terrorism (CT) Public Spaces programme funded by the European Union.

Ghana benefits from this regional project together with Kenya and Senegal. In all, eighteen selected participants will receive training in Accra in the areas of risk analysis and relevant procedures designed to prevent, eliminate or mitigate terrorist threats. Spanish officers, in collaboration with Belgian police, are implementing the programme.

At the opening ceremony, both the EU Ambassador, Razaaly, and the Ghana Police Service (GPS) CT Department Chief Superintendent, Mr. R. Adofiem, underlined the relevance of such trainings in view of the current security situation around the northern border areas of Ghana. The need for a stronger cooperation between various services in the country and beyond was also underlined.

The Ambassador of Spain to Ghana, Mr. Jose Javier Gutierrez Blanco-Navarrete, thanked the EU and the GPS for the joint efforts, pointing at the strengthened partnership in the field of security between the three.

The EU is increasingly engaged in supporting the security sector of Ghana. With the recent launch of NorPrevSec programme it provides with a comprehensive package of actions for the northernmost regions aiming at reducing violence, preventing conflicts, countering terrorism, as well as fighting the organised crime. Thanks to flexible external action instruments, the EU adopts a holistic and tailor-made approach designed to achieve effective and sustainable responses.
