Europe Week 2022: Erasmus+ networking event to promote EU-Ghana partnership on education

Removing barriers to learning and improving access to quality education for all has been a key priority of the EU since its origin. The Erasmus Programme - today named Erasmus+ - was established in 1987 enabling the mobility of more than four million students. Between 2004 and 2021: about 1.200 students and staff from Ghana moved to Europe for short-term mobility and almost 400 students benefitted from scholarships for joint master-degrees.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of Erasmus and the launch of the new phase of the programme: Erasmus+ 2021-2027. This presented an exceptional opportunity to highlight the fruitful partnership between the EU and Ghana in education and discuss the potential for new ambitious partnerships offered by Erasmus+.
In his speech at the reception, H. E. Irchad Razaaly emphasised that “education enables citizens to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge to make informed decisions for the benefit of themselves and their communities.”
“Learning in European centres of excellence represents a huge opportunity for our youth. This evening we acknowledge the excellent expertise and promising career that Erasmus+ Alumni are developing in their Country. I encourage more students and universities to join the Erasmus+ network and embrace the new exciting opportunities offered by the new phase of the Programme”, Ambassador Razaaly added.

Erasmus+ is the EU’s largest Flagship Initiative to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. Through a bottom-up programme with annual calls for proposals, Erasmus+ provides a range of opportunities that have an international dimension, both for individuals and for institutions. The programme promotes cultural experiences and exchanges, as well as youth empowerment through education.
With a total budget of €26.2 billion – and €570 million allocated to Sub-Saharan Africa - the programme places a strong focus on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and promoting young people’s participation in democratic life.
