The Ghanaian energy sector is characterized by a high electricity access rate of 84%, although inequality of access between urban and rural areas remains.

 

Ghana’s energy sector faces major challenges (governance, infrastructure, commercial and financial viability). To remedy the financial difficulties, the Government of Ghana has developed a series of reforms embedded in the Energy Sector Recovery Program (2019-2023) to address the sector for future growth.

Due to the unstable energy supply, end-users have reduced their reliance on the grid, switching to diesel generators. To facilitate Ghana’s energy decarbonisation path, the EU is well equipped to support the extension and modernization of both the transmission and the distribution network via the mobilisation of EU investment grants and guarantees (such as this project).
