Background:

The year 2021 has been designated as the International Year of the Elimination of Child Labour and the 12th of June is the World Day Against Child Labour.

The European Union (EU) is firmly committed to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Target 8.7, ending child labour in all forms by 2025.

While the number of children engaged in child labour has declined by 94 million since 2000, the pace of progress has slowed down significantly between 2016 and 2021. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic may further compromise possible improvements.

The new global estimates and trends on child labour (2016-2020) will be released on the 10th of June 2021 by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) under the aegis of Alliance 8.7.

The EU contributes to the reduction of child labour through various programmes and partnerships.

The EU has strong partnerships with international organisations, national authorities and Non-Governmental Organisations in Ghana to combat child labour. The “Trade for Decent Work” project, the “Ghana Employment and Social Protection” (GESP) Programme, the “Sustainable Nets” project, the ongoing National dialogue on Sustainable Cocoa are only a few examples of our actions to contribute to the elimination of child labour and the promotion of decent jobs.
