‘Guatemala and the European Union promote the transformation of the Motagua River Basin’

Guatemala, May 2025 - The European Union (EU), together with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), are organising the Investment Forum “Motagua: Investing in Circular Economy”- on 27 and 28 May 2025 in Guatemala City.

More than 250 representatives of Guatemalan and European institutions from the public and private sectors, civil society, academia and international organisations, including cooperation agencies and development banks, will participate in the event.

The forum is part of the “Integrated Intervention Strategy for the Motagua River Basin”, a flagship initiative framed within the Global Gateway Investment Agenda that seeks to boost smart and sustainable investments worldwide in key areas such as digitalisation, energy transition, transport, health, education, research and circular economy.

The main objective of the “Motagua Investment Forum” is to facilitate strategic alliances for the recovery of the Motagua River Basin in the field of circular economy. The forum aims to generate sustainable investment opportunities, networking and business development, generate spaces for multi-sectoral dialogue, and promote innovation and technological development together with actors from Guatemala and Team Europe (EU, Member States and their financial institutions).

The main themes of the Forum are:

  • Investment opportunities and financing mechanisms for sustainable development.
  • Transformative solutions for circular waste management.
  • Research, development and innovation (R&D&I) for the transition to the circular economy.
  • Role of civil society and municipalities in the challenges of the Motagua River Basin.
  • B2B (Business to Business) meetings Europe-Guatemala,
  • Europe-Guatemala B2G (Business to Government) meetings (networking sessions) and exhibition of innovations and solutions.
  • Presentations of key initiatives such as “PROGuatemala” of the Government of Guatemala and “Guatemala No Se Detiene”, driven by the private sector.

”Through the Motagua Investment Forum, we reiterate the commitment of the European Union to work hand in hand with Guatemala and its regional partners to face together the environmental challenges with sustainable, innovative and collective impact solutions”, highlighted Thomas Peyker, Ambassador of the European Union in Guatemala.

“This forum is an excellent opportunity to showcase innovative and market-based solutions to the environmental problems afflicting the country, especially in the Motagua watershed. We are very excited about the green business and investment opportunities for the country that can be derived from this event,” said Edwin Castellanos, Vice Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change.
