EU Civil Protection Team Meets With Ambassadors

A team of experts dispatched by the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to Iceland met with the EU Ambassador and Ambassadors of EU Member States to discuss their mission to Iceland and the situation concerning the ongoing seismic activity on Reykjanes Peninsula.

Due to on-going seismic activity on Reykjanes peninsula, the European Union reacted to the Icelandic Government's request and dispatched experts from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to assist Icelandic authorities on the ground.

These experts in volcanology and emergency evacuation are from five EU Member States and have, together with Icelandic authorities, explored potential disaster preparedness and response actions such as high-capacity water pumping to cool down and divert the lava flows.

The team has met with numerous Icelandic institutions such as the Icelandic Civil Protection, Coast Guard, the Icelandic Met Office, engineers at Svartsengi Power Plant and Ministers of Justice, Finance and Infrastructure.

The team visited the town of Grindavík where the experts met with the local incident commander and assessed the situation.

This is #EUsolidarity in action - we are #StrongerTogether
