Executive Director of Frontex in Iceland

Mr. Hans Leijtens, the Executive Director of Frontex, was in Reykjavík this week. During his stay, Mr. Leijtens met with the Icelandic Minister of Justice as well as Ambassadors of European Union Member States and of Norway to discuss the future of Frontex and the cooperation with Iceland.

 

Hans Leijtens, the Executive Director of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, was in Iceland this week to meet with the Icelandic Minister of Justice, Ms. Þorbjörg Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir, Members of Parliament (Alþingi) and representatives of the Icelandic National Police Commissioner. 

During his stay, Mr Leijtens also had a meeting with Ambassadors of European Union Member States and of Norway. 

During the meeting, the future of Frontex was discussed. The Agency has undergone significant changes since its establishment in 2004 with an increasing role in managing and ensuring security of our common external European borders. Iceland is an active participant in the Schengen and Frontex cooperation and contributes to aerial surveillance and police cooperation, to name examples.
