Opening of the European Award Season at Bíó Paradís

Last week, the Delegation welcomed over a hundred guests to the opening film of the 2026 European Award Season, hosted by Bíó Paradís!

Last Wednesday, the 5th of November, the European Award Season - European filmmaking in focus - was held for the fourth time in Bíó Paradís. Over one hundred artists, politicians, film enthusiasts and others gathered to celebrate the opening of the Award Season in Iceland. Following the opening screening, guests were invited to enjoy light refreshments in a reception, provided by the EU Delegation to Iceland.

The Ambassador of the European Union to Iceland, Clara Ganslandt, held a short address for guests. She emphasized the European Union's contributions to the Icelandic film industry, with a large number of films and television series in Iceland, as well as throughout Europe, having received funding from the 'Creative Europe' programme. According to the Ambassador, it is a fundamental value of the European Union to promote cultural diversity and artistic cooperation across borders, which includes providing support for Icelandic art.

This year, the Franco-Belgian film “Young Mothers” was selected as the opening screening film at the festival; which will run until January 17th when the festival officially concludes with the European Film Awards, presented in Berlin, Germany. Following the premiere, the film will be screened for the next month at Bíó Paradís. The movie’s creators, screenwriters and directors - the Dardenne brothers - are considered to be among the most influential European film creators of our time.

Bíó Paradís is currently offering an exciting lineup, including movies like “It Was Just an Accident”, “Sentimental Value”, and “The Extraordinary Miss Flower”. We encourage all film enthusiasts to discover Bíó Paradís’ full selection and purchase tickets at bioparadis.is!
