EDUU Education and Cultural Heritage Enhancement for Social Cohesion in Iraq

15.12.2019

In the framework of the crisis affecting Iraq and the autonomous region of Kurdistan in the aftermath of the recent conflict, the key aim for this grant is to increase communities' access to services and enhance the capacity of local government in those areas of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) most affected by high poverty and high numbers of IDPs and refugees.

A Municipal Granting System (MGS) managed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has been set up.

So far, the project has provided 16 grants to selected municipalities for small scale restoration of access to basic services. Interventions have focussed on the rehabilitation of schools and roads, and the improvement of access to water and electricity.

Increasing local government capacity at municipality level is expected to improve the delivery of basic services to citizens.

The project has also trained staff at regional and sub-district levels to support the identification and implementation of sub-grants.
