The action aims to increase access to employment opportunities in basic services and waste management sectors for unemployed youth and vulnerable urban population in Basra City.

The action aims to increase access to employment opportunities in basic services and waste management sectors for unemployed youth and vulnerable urban population in Basra City. To this end, the action will provide basic services such as water, electricity, waste management and access roads in vulnerable and underserviced urban settlements and create job opportunities. The action will also enhance skills and capacities of vulnerable youth and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Basra City to increase employability and productivity.

The overall objective of the Action is to increase access to employment opportunities in basic services and waste management sectors for unemployed youth and vulnerable urban population in Basra City.

The specific objectives are:

1:         Basic services such as water, electricity, waste management and access roads are provided in urban and informal settlements in Basra City.

2:         Skills and capacities of vulnerable urban population and SMEs in Basra City are enhanced to increase employability and productivity.

The expected outputs includes: GIS dashboard depicting conditions of basic services in underserviced areas of Basra; Neighbourhood Profiles and Area Upgrading Plans drafted; urban upgrading projects of three medium-sized underserviced settlements; wash and waste collection intervention, unemployed men and women trained and employed in urban upgrading, wash and waste collection/recycling  labour intensive schemes.

 

The project is part of the EU’s response to the COVID-19 crisis in Iraq, with the overall objective to the socio-economic recovery, stability and socio-economic development of Iraq.
