The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have functions similar to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegation to Japan was established in 1974 with the objective of fostering closer ties between the EU and Japan.

 

Job description

Section in the organisation chart

Political, Press and Information Section, reporting to the Head of Section

Job objective

To provide analyses and assessments of domestic and foreign political developments in Japan, and to build a network of contacts in the Japanese Diet, think tanks, NGOs, academia and other relevant organizations

Main Tasks

 Drafting of foreign policy analyses, reports, speaking points and other briefing materials

 Liaising and meeting arrangements with Japanese policy makers, MOFA officials, civil society, academics

 Liaising with the diplomatic missions of the 27 EU Member States in Tokyo and with the wider diplomatic community (G7/G20)

 Supervision and management of relevant EU Delegation projects in the area of human rights and gender issues

 Outreach and event management activities (conferences, seminars, PR activities)

 

Working hours

Full time (37.5 hours per week); standard working hours from 9:00 to 17:30 (with one-hour break), possibility of flexitime

Working environment

The Delegation has a unique multicultural working environment employing around 60 members of staff of whom 1one-third are diplomatic European Union nationals and the remaining are locally recruited staff (mainly Japanese nationals).

Employment contract duration

The contract is for a fixed term starting as early as possible and terminating on 27 March 2023, which may be extended depending on the situation.

Japanese national holidays; proportional annual leave entitlement

Gross salary

JPY 687,777 per month

University degree

Postgraduate degree (Master, PhD)

Professional experience

Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience (foreign affairs and diplomacy)

Relevant professional experience in diplomatic and/or international organisations

Knowledge of the EU institutions

Knowledge of languages 

Excellent command in English (working language- C2 level of the CEFR) and good command of Japanese. Ability to draft in the English language to tight deadlines.

Knowledge of other European Union language(s)

Knowledge of IT tools

Microsoft Office

 

Personal skills 

Motivated, sense of contact, ability to work in a team, organisation, reactiveness

Work and residence permit

The candidate should have a valid work and residence permit for Japan
