Ambassador Geiger says Kwaheri Kenya

As EU Ambassador Geiger concludes her five-year mandate, she reflected on the transformation of EU-Kenya relations into a partnership of equals, built on shared interests, mutual opportunities and joint action on global challenges.

Speaking during an interview on NTV Kenya's Fixing the Nation, Ambassador Geiger noted that, as the European Union celebrates 50 years of partnership with Kenya, the relationship has evolved far beyond development cooperation into a comprehensive political and economic partnership. "We moved from a pure development partner to a strategic partnership," she said, emphasising that today's cooperation is centred on creating win-win opportunities for both Kenya and the European Union. This partnership is underpinned by the recognition that today's global challenges can only be addressed through closer cooperation between like-minded partners, making Kenya an increasingly important partner for the European Union on the international stage.

This is reflected in several key initiatives, including the EU-Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement, which provides Kenyan exports with free access to the EU market, labour mobility partnerships between Kenya and several EU Member States, ongoing work towards a Data Adequacy Agreement to unlock new opportunities in the digital economy, and the Global Gateway strategy, through which the EU and its Member States are jointly mobilising sustainable investments under the Team Europe approach.

Ambassador Geiger also underlined Kenya's growing importance as a partner on the international stage. Beyond strong bilateral ties, she noted that cooperation increasingly extends to global challenges, including multilateral reform and global governance. Kenya's participation in international forums such as the G7, she said, reflects the country's growing influence and the increasingly strategic nature of EU-Kenya relations. "That is a very good sign of a partnership of equals," she concluded.
