Data Protection: Kenya and the EU launch very first Adequacy Dialogue on the African continent

European Union EU chargé d'affaires a.i Ondrej Šimek delivered opening remarks at the Network for African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA) Conference in Nairobi.

7 May 2024, Nairobi – Today, Deputy Ambassador Ondrej Šimek spoke at the presidential opening of the NADPA conference. He was joined by colleagues from the European Commission’s Directorate General on Justice and Consumers.

This conference comes at a very important time when the EU and Kenya are strengthening their cooperation on digital matters, including through the first Adequacy Dialogue on the African continent. If successful, these talks can result in an Adequacy Decision, which would mean that personal data can flow freely from the EU to Kenya without any limitations or restrictions. This would bring significant benefits for digital trade and investment, data accessibility and business process outsourcing and would amplify the benefits of the recently concluded EU-Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement.
