EU stages puppet show on the sidelines of UNEA-6

On 26 February, on the sidelines of UNEA-6, the EU Delegation staged the puppet performance “Leo's Search for a New Home” at Peponi School in Nairobi.

The performance tackled plastic pollution in oceans and highlighted shared EU values of individual and communal responsibility for environmental conservation. It followed the story of Leo, a young sea turtle looking for a place he can call home. Along the way, Leo faces obstacles and learns valuable lessons about the environment, perseverance, determination, and the importance of joint action.

350 children were present at the event, with students also coming from Farasi Lane Primary School and Lower Kabete Primary School. Through the interactive component of the play, the children learnt the importance of preserving ecosystems and the important motto “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.

The show was staged on the sidelines of the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6). The Assembly is taking place from 26 to 1 March, and focuses on how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. It is an opportunity for world governments, civil society groups, the scientific community and the private sector to shape the global environmental policy.

Director for Sustainable Development in the EU Directorate General for Environment

Astrid Schomaker, Director for Sustainable Development of the European Union Directorate General for Environment attended the show and interacted with the children. She welcomed the positive engagements on how to reduce plastic pollution in oceans.
