From Germany to Kenya: Translating knowledge into impact for communities

Prof. Boga is a Professor of Microbiology at Jomo Kenyatta University. A former Humboldt Fellow and Humboldt Ambassador Scientist for Kenya (2010–2015), he served as Principal Secretary in Kenya's State Department for Crops Development and Agricultural Research, and today shapes the strategic direction of two of Africa's leading research institutions as a board member of ICIPE and ICRAF.

Prof. Hamadi Iddi Boga earned his doctorate in Microbiology at the University of Konstanz in Germany in the year 2000, specializing in microbial ecology. He is an accomplished researcher with an extensive body of scientific work and has held senior leadership roles in Kenya, including serving as Principal Secretary in the State Department for Crop Development and  Agricultural Research. He currently serves as Vice President for Program Delivery at the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), overseeing large-scale agricultural transformation programs across Africa.

His European training strengthened his commitment to rigorous science and evidence-based policy, which has shaped his contributions to Kenya’s agricultural research systems, policy reforms, and development initiatives.

Reflecting on his journey, he notes: “My experience in Europe reinforced the value of science-driven solutions, but more importantly, the responsibility to translate knowledge into impact for farmers and communities.”
