Kenya’s BPO Boom: Why Europe is Betting on Africa’s Digital Talent Hub
On 26th March 2026, at the Kenya International Investment Conference 2026, the EU Delegation to Kenya, Invest Kenya, and Two Rivers International Finance & Innovation Centre (TRIFIC) co-hosted a dynamic side event spotlighting Kenya’s rapid rise as Africa’s premier Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) destination. The discussion—featuring insights from H.E. Henriette Geiger, EU Ambassador to Kenya, Ms. Brenda Mbathi, Trific CEO, Ministry of ICT and Industry leaders like Elewa & Teleperformance—they all made one thing clear: Kenya isn’t just emerging as a BPO hub—it’s redefining global digital collaboration.
Kenya has built strong foundations with a young, tech-savvy workforce (75% under 35) with strong English proficiency and competitive costs—ideal for European firms grappling with ICT skills shortages (Germany alone has 14,000 unfilled tech roles). Time-zone alignment with Europe enables real-time collaboration. Pioneering data governance: Kenya is on track to become the first African nation to secure an EU data adequacy decision, unlocking seamless cross-border data flows—a game-changer for digital trade.
The EU continues to bridge the digital gap in Kenya through initiatives like the Digitalisation for Development (D4D) Hub, strengthening data protection frameworks to align with EU standards, fostering trade partnerships that turn Kenya into a strategic nearshoring hub for European businesses. It backs this up with policy work to strengthen the enabling environment, high-level dialogue in the digital sector with the government.
As Ambassador Geiger emphasised during the event: “This isn’t just about outsourcing—it’s about co-creating a digital future where African innovation and European investment drive shared prosperity.”
