Local Statement on the EU Election Follow up Mission Final Report and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission

The Delegation of the European Union to Kenya issues the following statement together with the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States of Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden and joined by the diplomatic missions of Canada, Norway and Switzerland to Kenya.

The European Union deployed an Election Follow-up Mission to Kenya from 2 February to 1 March 2025. Its final report, now available, offers a detailed roadmap assessing the implementations status of the recommendations issued by the EU Election Observation Mission in 2022 and preparing Kenya for successful and credible elections in 2027. In particular, the report highlighted the urgent need for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) board to be appointed as one of its main findings.

We therefore welcome the progress in re-constituting the IEBC and we look forward to continuing our long-standing dialogue and cooperation with the IEBC and the Kenyan authorities on the electoral reforms process.
