Road to Schuman Nairobi: building security with partners in East Africa and the Western Indian Ocean

On Monday 2 November, the EU Delegation to Kenya and the HORN Institute bring together defence institutions, regional partners and experts in Nairobi to discuss maritime security and the changing terrorist threat.

In unstable times, security is built with partners.

The Road to Schuman Forum: EU-Kenya Security and Defence Cooperation in East Africa and the Western Indian Ocean takes place at the Mövenpick Hotel in Nairobi. This is one of eight Road to Schuman events organised by EU Delegations around the world ahead of the third Schuman Security and Defence Forum in Brussels on 17-18 November.

These regional conversations bring partners’ priorities and experience into the Forum, where the EU, its Member States, partner countries, international organisations and leading think tanks will discuss shared peace, security and defence challenges. As the EU and Kenya mark 50 years of partnership, the event will look at how cooperation can respond to the region’s security needs.

The discussion will centre on maritime security in the Red Sea and the Western Indian Ocean: Kenya’s role, regional coordination and partnership opportunities. The discussion will also look ahead at changes in the terrorist threat, including how Kenya’s defence posture can adapt, the role of AUSSOM and the future of regional security cooperation.

Speakers from Kenya’s defence and security institutions, the EU, regional organisations and think tanks will take part, and a summary of the discussions will carry Kenyan and regional perspectives to Brussels.
