Supporting Witness Protection in Kenya

With the support of the EU through the PLEAD Programme, new state-of-the art witness boxes were unveilled  at the Milimani Law Courts on 9th December.

On 9th December 2022, H.E. Ambassador Henriette Geiger attended a round table discussion on witness protection in Kenya. In attendance were Hon. Jedidah Waruhiu, Senior Milimani Law Court officials and other representatives from the National Council of Administration of Justice and the Witness Protection Agency of Kenya.

The European Union delivered 21 additional witness boxes that will be distributed to courtrooms around Kenya to help in upholding the safety and dignity of witnesses in judicial proceedings.

Ambassador Henriette affirmed the European Union’s continued support in the fight against serious crimes like corruption through the Programme for Legal Empowerment and Aid Delivery (PLEAD)  Programme. Through the witness boxes, the Witness Protection Agency would be empowered to deliver its mandate in the justice chain, while safeguarding the safety and welfare of witnesses.

The PLEAD Programme was launched in 2018 and aims at promoting human dignity, human rights, equality and the rule of law- all of which are fundamental values of the European Union. Through it, the European Union in Kenya partners with the Kenya Judicial System and other partners to respond to the challenges that hinder access to legal services and equitable representation before the law in Kenya.
