Europe Month in Kuwait kicks off with landmark Europe Day celebration
On 6 May, the EU Delegation in Kuwait kicked off the Europe Month celebrations in the country by hosting its annual Europe Day reception.
The event counted with the participation of Kuwait's Assistant Foreign Minister for Europe Affairs Ambassador Sadeq Maarafi and of the 16 resident EU Member-States Ambassadors and Chargés d'Affaires. The event gathered around 700 guests from across all sectors of the Kuwaiti society, including government officials, business and civil society representatives, media, artists and students. The event also gathered members of the diplomatic community and EU citizens.
In her landmark Europe Day speech, EU Ambassador Anne Koistinen reaffirmed the EU as a reliable partner, committed to respectful and mutually beneficial relations. “We defend a rules-based order and reject the law of the strong”, she said while condemning civilian deaths in Gaza & Russia’s war on Ukraine. Among other things, she also highlighted Kuwait’s GCC Presidency role in advancing the EU-GCC partnership, with Kuwait set to host both the upcoming EU-GCC Ministerial Meeting and the next EU-GCC Business Forum.
The event, which was widely covered by the local media, included artists performances, an exhibition about EU member states landscapes, an interactive game with special prizes and the display of a video about EU-Kuwait cultural connections, in celebration of Kuwait becoming the Arab Capital of Culture and Media in 2025.
