Kuwait Bar Association & EU Delegation in Kuwait organise a seminar on the protection of the legal profession

Kuwait Bar Association and the EU Delegation in Kuwait organised a high-level seminar titled “Exploring the International Treaty on the Protection of Lawyers and Its Dimensions” on 28 May 2025 at the Kuwait Bar Association and with the participation of European and Kuwaiti legal experts.

The event marks a significant moment for legal cooperation between Kuwait and Europe, following the adoption by the Council of Europe of the Convention for the Protection of the legal profession on 12 March 2025. This Convention is the first binding international instrument dedicated to safeguarding the independence, safety, and vital role of lawyers in protecting justice and human rights.

The seminar discussed the principles and objectives of the Convention as well as the importance of protecting lawyers and ensuring their independence. The seminar also touched on ways to exchange expertise with the Kuwaiti side on how to protect the principles of the legal profession in Kuwait in the context of the Convention.

The event began with a welcome address by Mr. Adnan Mahmoud Abul, President of the Kuwait Bar Association. The keynote address was delivered by H.E. Ms. Anne Koistinen, Ambassador of the European Union to the State of Kuwait. She said: “Our relationship with Kuwait is strong and forward-looking. And I believe that deepening ties between our legal communities—through professional exchanges, shared expertise, and joint initiatives—will further strengthen the values we both cherish. Kuwait has a long-standing tradition of legal professionalism and a dynamic and active Bar Association. The EU Delegation remains open for cooperation, and facilitate exchanges of knowledge, expertise and experience that could be beneficial for our societies both in Europe and in Kuwait.”

The event was attended by legal professionals, academics, European diplomats, law students, who are interested in safeguarding international legal standards and the rule of law.
