Second European Union – Central Asia Economic Forum was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan
The second European Union-Central Asia Economic Forum was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 18 and 19 May 2023, and where the strategic importance, relevance and intensity of deepened relations were highlighted. In the Joint Communique to intensify efforts in areas such as creating an attractive business environment, enhancing green and digital transitions, as well as trade and connectivity was stressed.
As part the European Union Initiative Global Gateway: Executive Vice President and EU Commissioner for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis also announced that the Commission as a follow up to the Economic Forum will organise an investment conference later this year “to follow up on soft and hard infrastructure projects” contained in a new study on EU-Central Asia sustainable transport corridors. This study had been conducted by the EBRD and the EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso presented the main conclusions.
The increased importance of the relations between the EU and the Kyrgyz Republic was reconfirmed during the respective bilateral meetings, conducted on the side-lines of the Economic Forum by Mr Valdis Dombrovskis and by Ms Teresa Czerwinska, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank. The Kyrgyz Republic delegation was led by Mr Akylbek Japarov, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and included Mr Ruslan Tatikov, Deputy Minister of Finance, as well as Mr Aybek Moldogaziev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. An agreement on Green Economy Programme in the Kyrgyz Republic with EUR 3 million EU contribution was signed by Ms Myriam Ferran, Deputy Director-General for International Partnerships at the European Commission and Mr Iskender Asylkulov, Deputy Minister of Economy and Commerce of the Kyrgyz Republic.
