The 2026 European Film Festival Kicks Off in Vientiane with a Celebration of Storytelling, Cultural Exchange, and New Initiatives for Lao Cinema

Vientiane, 21 May 2026 – The 2026 European Film Festival officially opens tonight at the French Institute in Vientiane, bringing together representatives from the Government of Lao PDR, diplomatic missions, filmmakers, students and cultural enthusiasts for a vibrant celebration of European cinema and its power to bridge cultures. Organised by the Delegation of the European Union to Lao PDR, in collaboration with EU Member States and local partners, this year’s festival promises an exciting programme of award-winning films, capacity-building workshops, and groundbreaking initiatives to foster Lao - European cultural exchange.

This year’s festival features eight outstanding films from eight European countries: France, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, each offering a unique window into European’s rich cultural tapestry, comprising 27 countries and 24 languages. From thought-provoking dramas to uplifting comedies, these films reflect the artistic diversity of the continent.

The European Film Festival is a long-standing tradition, organised by EU Delegations worldwide to share Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity with global audiences. Here in Lao PDR, our festival has become a regular ingredient of the cultural calendar, fostering people-to-people connections and deepening mutual understanding between our societies.

This year, the festival takes a bold step forward with two new initiatives designed to support Lao filmmakers and enrich cultural dialogue:

  • The first initiative is supporting two dedicated workshops for young local filmmakers: one on the art of voice-over and dubbing, and another one on character development and storytelling. These workshops aim to nurture talent, share expertise, and strengthen the skills of Lao creatives and we hope that they will contribute to building confidence and craftsmanship amongst local filmmakers.
  • The second new element is a collaborating with the CinéClub of the “Lanxang Shorts” who will screen four European films here at the French Institute, followed by discussions where audiences can exchange ideas on content, techniques, and the unique qualities of each film. This partnership is more than just screening movies - it’s about creating a space for dialogue, learning, and inspiration.

As a direct result of the dubbing workshop, the festival will premiere a Czech-Romanian co-production dubbed into Lao, a first for Laos. The film will screen at the French Institute on 3 July, before travelling to Savannakhet’s historic Film Theatre in September and the Blue Chair Film Festival in Luang Prabang in December. This initiative proves that language is no barrier to great storytelling and marks a significant step in cultural exchange between Europe and Laos.

This year’s edition is made possible through partnerships with the Department for Cinema of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the French Institute, Lanxang Shorts, and the Blue Chair Festival, and alongside the eight participating European countries.

The festival runs from 21 to 24 May, with daily screenings at the French Institute in Vientiane. We invite you to a journey through cinema, a journey that entertains, increases mutual understanding, and deepens the friendship between Europe and the Lao PDR.
