Lao Youth Upgrade Content Creation Skills to Jointly Protect Online Scams and Human Trafficking
The digital world is like a double-edged sword, and across the Southeast Asian region, including Lao PDR, online scams and human trafficking have rapidly become an urgent human security crisis. In Vientiane Capital, a strong new defense force is emerging.
On June 3-4, 2026, the "Youth Protecting Themselves Against Scams and Human Trafficking" campaign was officially launched in Vientiane. This pioneering initiative, jointly supported by the European Union in Lao PDR, the German Embassy to Lao PDR, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), alongside key Lao ministries such as the Ministry of Technology and Communications, the Ministry of Public Security, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, marks a significant step in safeguarding young Laotians from digital threats.
This intensive two-day training workshop brought together 45 enthusiastic young content creators from diverse backgrounds, equipping them with critical knowledge and skills to counter cybercriminals and human trafficking. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Lao PDR remains vulnerable as both a source and transit country for human trafficking, often linked to deceptive online job offers and fake investment schemes.
Throughout the two days, participants gained direct insights from law enforcement and technology experts, learning about the art of ethical storytelling, digital media production, and the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. What is their ambitious goal? To produce high-impact videos, infographics, and social media content that will educate and protect a wide audience nationwide to disrupt cyber scams and human trafficking.
The campaign highlighted a strong collaboration between government agencies and youth creativity, combining official expertise with grassroots innovation.

H.E. Mark Gallagher, European Union Ambassador to Lao PDR, mentioned: "This initiative is not just about raising awareness, it is about building a sustainable defense system led by young people themselves. By empowering youth with digital skills, we are turning them into agents of change who can protect their peers from exploitation."

Echoing this sentiment, H.E. Keovisouk Solaphom, Deputy Minister of Technology and Communications, praised the commitment of the content creators, stating that their upcoming outputs are not just ordinary digital media, but a "'shield' that will help protect the Lao people, our brothers, sisters, friends, and families from the dangers of cyber fraud and human trafficking."
Although the training workshop in Vientiane Capital has successfully concluded, the real mission of building a sustainable national defense system has just begun. A powerful youth-led social media campaign will be rolled out online very soon. You can stay tuned for these upcoming key posts, share tips on identifying scams and human trafficking with your family and friends, and join hands to ensure the digital world remains a place of opportunity, not exploitation.
