The sectarian model on which Lebanon’s political structure and patriarchal system are based on contribute to reinforcing gender stereotypes, ultimately preventing women from participating in public life as equally as men. Lebanon’s official report under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination (CEDAW) prepared by the National Commission for Lebanese Women (NCLW) reported that “discriminatory laws are attributable to the traditional stereotype image of women within the patriarchal gender system”.
To counter these trends, the European Union is working towards a better inclusion of women in politics and economy, ultimately providing them with more independence and potential for positive engagement in the public life, both within their community and society as a whole.
By promoting easier access to financing and credit channels, the European Union also aims to fight poverty and marginalisation among women, while promoting their empowerment and financial independence.
