EU-UNDP initiative supports entrepreneurs’ recovery in Sebha
Six entrepreneurs from Sebha have new hope to save their businesses that have suffered severely under the years long conflict and the latest hit from the coronavirus pandemic. The entrepreneurs are running businesses in the farming, clothes manufacturing, car repair, food, and beauty industries sectors. The EU-UNDP initiative will provide financial support, training and mentoring, and thus help the entrepreneurs to reboost their businesses and even create up to 45 new jobs in Sebha.
For Ms. Aisha Rajab, one of the awardees and owner of tailor shop: “These grants will give us the opportunity to continue working on our businesses after the negative impact of COVID-19. It will contribute to achieving economic development and will enable us to overcome the difficulties that we face from the lack of finances and the impact of the deteriorating security situation on our businesses”. Mr. Abu Baker Jamaa, member of the Sebha Municipal council, underlined the needs of Sebha region of such positive interventions, contributing to create sustainable development and recovery from the crises.

This event demonstrated the creativity and the desire of people of Sebha to contribute to their community with their innovative business idea, and this gives us hope for the future of Libya,’’ said Sandra Goffin, Head of Operations at the EU Delegation to Libya.
The Re-Start-Up marathon is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Governance in Tripoli, Sabratha, Sebha, Murzuq, Benghazi, Ajdabiya and Al Kufra municipalities. The initiative is part of the EU-funded “Strengthening Local Capacities for Resilience and Recovery” project that aims to support local authorities to restore essential services delivery, community security and livelihoods opportunities.
