Joint Statement by the Delegation of the European Union and the Diplomatic Missions of the EU Member States to Libya on the case of Mr Al Mahdi Abdulati

The Delegation of the European Union and the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States to Libya express grave concern over the arrest in Misrata on 18 March of political activist  Mr Al Mahdi Abdulati who is reportedly held in an undisclosed location.

We stand in full solidarity with Mr Abdulati’s family and community. His enforced disappearance, alongside broader reports of a shrinking civic space in Libya, raises serious concerns about the targeting of activists and political voices. We call on all relevant authorities to immediately disclose Mr Abdulati’s whereabouts, guarantee his safety and physical integrity, and ensure his prompt and unconditional release. Those responsible for his arbitrary detention and any ill-treatment must be held accountable without delay.

The European Union reiterates that respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression and an open civic space, is indispensable for any credible political process. We will continue to support efforts to strengthen accountability and uphold these principles across Libya.
