Call for Visual Identity Designs: 50th Anniversary of the European Union and Malawi Partnership

Theme: Rooted in Values, Focused on the Future

2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the partnership between Malawi and the EU. The Delegation of the European Union to Malawi, is organizing a competition for the designs of a logo /visual identity and a chitenje to mark the occasion that would be used on various communications and visibility materials, related activities and social media channels during 2026.

Competition Overview

  1. All Malawians may apply, regardless of age.
  2. Submissions must be received no later than 17:00 (local time) on Friday, 27 February 2026.
  3. Please submit your designs by email to EUMalawi50@gmail.com
  4. The EU Delegation will evaluate all designs received and select one submission to be used as its logo for communications and visibility materials, related activities and social media channels during 2026.
  5. The selected works, as well as those given honourable mention, will be announced on the Delegation’s website and social media channels.
  6. The designer of the winning works will receive a prize.
  7. The winners and those who submitted works given honourable mention will be invited to the Europe Day Reception in May 2026.
  8. The winning designs will be used in communications and visibility activities and materials related to the celebration of 50 years of the EU-Malawi partnership throughout the year 2026.

Designs Submission 

Those wishing to take part in this competition should attach their designs, together with the completed application form (Word document), to an email with the subject title “Logo and Chitenje Design Competition Entry” and addressed to EUMalawi50@gmail.com. We regret that we cannot accept submissions by post.

  1. Participating creatives are asked to submit two designs:

    --One (1) official 50th anniversary logo

    --One (1) design for a chitenje, incorporating this same logo and theme (cultural/linguistic/visual/historical/symbolic) design elements referencing both Malawi and the European Union, into a seamless repeat.

    Please submit both colour and black-and-white versions of the design (no restrictions on number of colours, gradations, etc.). 

  2. Each should be sent as a JPEG or PNG file no larger than 3MB and at a resolution of at least 300 dpi and should fit on an A4 page when printed (formatting changes may be requested if necessary).
  3. The designs should include the number ‘50’ and may reference the anniversary’s motto: ‘Rooted in Values, focused on the Future’
  4. The logo design must enable its effective use through many different sizes and on very different supports (from an email letterhead to a billboard).
  5. The explanation of the design on the application form should be approximately 80 words long. Please do not include it in the email body text. This explanation will be made public if the designs are selected.
  6. Each entrant is limited to one application.
  7. No submitted materials will be returned.

Points to Note

Submitted designs must be new, not previously published anywhere else and must not infringe on copyrights, trademarks etc., of any third parties. Designs should be human-made, not AI-generated. 

Submissions that contain any of the following will be disqualified:

  • content that is offensive,
  • content that violates or might violate laws,
  • content promoting political or religious groups or positions,
  • content that is culturally or socially insensitive,
  • content that is for commercial purposes.
  • The selected design will be subject to any edits, alterations or processing necessary for use by the Delegation. In the event the logo is found to be unsatisfactory after the selection process, or if agreement cannot be reached as to revisions to the logo, the selected design will be withdrawn from use.
  • All rights to submitted designs and the copyright to the winning design will belong to the Delegation. Submission of a design signifies that the entrant agrees to relinquish all rights and interests in them.
  • In principle, submitted designs will not be altered other than to adjust size and/or colour, or to translate any text into Chichewa or English.
  • The selected designs may be withdrawn from use if any information submitted with the designs is later determined to be false.
  • The selected designs in their final form will be distributed to parties authorized by the Delegation and will be used to promote the 50th anniversary of the EU Delegation in Malawi and related social media activities.
  • Personal information (other than name and affiliation) of those submitting designs will not be disclosed or offered to third parties without the entrant’s permission.
  • Receipt of submissions will not be acknowledged, and those who submitted designs that were not selected for use or honorable mention will not be contacted. We regret that no inquiries concerning the judgment process can be accepted.

Judging Criteria

  • Creativity: Beauty, and originality.
  • Relevance: How well the logo represents the 50th anniversary of the EU-Malawi partnership:
  • Visual Impact: Clarity, and effectiveness in conveying the message.
  • Versatility: Ability to be used across various mediums and platforms, with use in different sizes and formats.

Award

The winning designer will receive a prize up to 1 million Malawi Kwacha and a trophy from the EU Ambassador.
