EU in Malawi celebrates International Democracy Day

On Thursday 15th September, EU collaborated with the Parliament of Malawi and the University of Malawi’s Department of Political Science and Administrative Studies to commemorate international Democracy Day under the theme “Democracy beyond Elections”.

The event, which brought together the Speaker of Malawi Parliament, democracy experts, faculty members and students, premiered a documentary produced after Malawi’s 2019 disputed Presidential election and the events that followed, including the 2020 re-run ordered by the Court, to stimulate debate on whether there is more to democracy than just electoral processes.

EU Ambassador, Rune Skinnebach, said that although a free, fair and transparent electoral process is the hallmark of a matured democracy, democracy goes beyond the ballot box. “Elections are indeed important but they do not negate the other equally important values and principles like liberty, equality, justice and various freedoms that we enjoy presently and those we should always fight to defend uphold and protect,” he said.

The Speaker of Parliament expressed satisfaction with the freedom that the citizenry practice in Malawi. She mentioned the petitions that people write and submit to Parliament as prime examples of people enjoying their basic human rights.

It was inspiring to witness a good level of enthusiasm, debate, thought and interaction amongst the students.
