European Film Festival Malawi 2026 Showcases Fresh Voices and Diverse Stories

The European Film Festival (EFF) 2026 again brought together film lovers to celebrate storytelling and cultural exchange. Over four days, 14 European films from 10 European countries and five Malawian films, screened free of charge in Blantyre and Lilongwe.

The Festival started on 12 September 2026, with a vibrant film-making workshop that sparked meaningful conversations at the Alliance Francaise in Blantyre. The official opening of the Festival followed on 18 September, at the EU Residence, and screenings continued on the 19th and 20th September at Pabwalo Multipurpose Centre and Lilongwe Girls Secondary School.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony, Ambassador Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi noted that since its inception in 2018, the Festival provides a premium platform for people from both Malawi and Europe and beyond to connect through storytelling and learn from each other, fostering inclusivity and diversity.

“This is about creating bridges. Through the movies that we bring, we try to open up Europe and Europeans to you in our diversity, and through the movies you share with us, we come to better understand Malawian realities, your dreams and aspirations,” said the Ambassador.

From action dramas (France) to animated shorts (Norway), from musical documentaries (Malawi) to feelgood sport dramedies (Spain), the Festival triggered laughter, tears, and everything in between, bringing everyone in the audience a bit closer to each other.
