Europe Day 2025 in Malaysia

To mark Europe Day this year, the EU Delegation to Malaysia organised a series of targeted engagements aimed at celebrating EU values and strengthening outreach across a wide range of stakeholders.

To kickstart, the EU Ambassador to Malaysia, H.E. Rafael Daerr, appeared on BFM Radio’s flagship programme - The Breakfast Grille. In the interview, Ambassador Daerr provided insights into the multifaceted EU-Malaysia partnership, covering topics such as the EU-Malaysia FTA, EUDR, US tariffs, trade relations, climate ambition, security, and the evolving global geopolitical landscape.

In collaboration with the Asia School of Business (ASB), the EU Delegation hosted the event “Powering Resilience: EU-Malaysia Partnership in Turbulent Times”. During his opening remarks, H.E. Rafael Daerr emphasised how shared principles like openness, fair competition, and rules-based cooperation can drive resilience amid growing global uncertainty. A moderated discussion followed, featuring H.E. Rafael Daerr, Mr. Denis Baresch, Minister Counsellor and Head of Trade and Economic Section at the EU Delegation, Professor Hans Genberg, Senior Director, Central Banking and Finance Programs of ASB, and moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Renato De Lima de Oliveira, Associate Dean of Student Journey, Associate Professor I of Management and Research Affiliate at MIT. The discussion focused on evolving EU-Malaysia relations, FTA negotiations, and ways to build a more stable, mutually beneficial future.

Additionally, H.E. Rafael Daerr participated in the third edition of the Asian Strategy and Leadership Incorporated’s (ASLI) Diplomatic Dynamics Series, themed ‘Deals, Diplomacy, and a Divided World: Europe & Malaysia at the Crossroads’. The session discussed the importance of EU unity, the EU-Malaysia FTA, climate and green finance cooperation, and Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship.

Further engaging with the young professionals, H.E. Rafael Daerr joined the Perdana Fellow Alumni Association’s (PFAA) Speaker Series titled “The Future of EU-Malaysia Relations – What Young Professionals Need to Know”. The session focused on youth engagement, sustainability, digital transformation, and the critical role of young professionals in shaping the future of EU-Malaysia ties, alongside discussions on trade, climate, and security. Moreover, H.E. Rafael Daerr also appeared on Bernama TV’s Diplomatic Dispatch for an in-depth interview, continuing outreach to a broader Malaysian audience and reinforcing the EU’s commitment to transparency, dialogue, and cooperation.

Together, these engagements aim not only to celebrate Europe Day but also to reinforce the EU’s strategic partnership with Malaysia. Through open dialogue, thought leadership, and multi-stakeholder engagement, the EU Delegation to Malaysia reaffirmed its dedication to building a resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking relationship with Malaysia.
