Screening of “Cuba & Alaska”, a tribute to the courage of the people of Ukraine

The Delegation has organised, with the French Embassy and Institut français de Maurice, the screening of ‘Cuba & Alaska’, a documentary by Ukrainian film director Yegor Troyanovsky. The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E.Mr Oliver Knoerich, who was on official visit to Mauritius, was present. The objective of this open event, which gathered several members of the Ukrainian Association in Mauritius representatives of Mauritius’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a number of Heads of Mission of like-minded partners, was to demonstrate the EU solidarity with Ukraine as we mark four years of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

In his address, Marios Vitos, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. stated : “It is imperative that 2026 becomes the year this aggression against Ukraine comes to an end. The European Union's stance is unequivocal: we want peace in Ukraine, and we want this peace to be lasting, credible, and consistent with international law.”

The Ambassador of France, H.E.Mr Frédéric Bontems said that this fourth anniversary was a time for ‘remembrance and solidarity’. Addressing the Secretary for Foreign Affairs who graced the event with his presence, he thanked Mauritius for voting in favour of the latest UN resolution for a lasting peace in Ukraine.

‘Cuba & Alaska’, which is a co-production between Ukraine, France and Belgium, tells the story of two best friends, the dark-haired Yulia and fair-haired Olexandra, who are medics at the frontline of Ukraine’s war.

Mr Vitos also said : “The choice to screen this documentary, which includes humour, is not about forgetting the brutality of war, it is about showing “a story of friendship during wartime” as the film director himself describes his work.”

A representative of the Ukrainian Association in Mauritius appreciated the angle taken by the film director, beyond showing only bombs and destruction.

The documentary is a story of resilience and commitment, a reflection of the courage of the people of Ukraine, who continue to resist and defend their country.
