Trade Success No.8: Moringa Wave Sarl - Export of Moringa products to the EU, when fair trade is combined with the solidarity and circular economy

"Trade Success" is a series about stories of entrepreneurs who benefit from the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the European Union (EU) and signatory countries of the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) region. In this 8th issue, we are pleased to introduce to you Moringa Wave Sarl a company based in Madagascar exporting Moringa based products to the EU.

Native to India, Moringa oleifera (Moringaceae) popularly known as “moringa” and, in some parts of the world as drumstick or horseradish tree, is also called "ananambo" in Madagascar. This plant is well-known for its exceptional nutritional qualities.

Key facts about Moringa Wave Sarl:

  • Founded in 2016
  • Based at the Bevalala Vocational Training Centre of Malaho in Antananarivo, Madagascar
  • Exports of Moringa-based products to France in 2021 represented 64% of the market
  • To date (August 2023) exports of spices and handicrafts to the Netherlands and Italy accounts for more than 80% of the company's annual turnover

Company profile:

Moringa Wave Sarl is a company that produces and markets Moringa based products. The company is the result of a collaboration between committed minds from different countries and fields, who have come together around strong values. This project is the combination of a deep knowledge of the local context and a sensitivity to the problems of sustainable development in Madagascar. The production, distribution and marketing of the products are done according to the criteria of the solidarity and circular economy as well as the principles of fair trade.

The company is a member of the United Nations Global Compact. It has a deep understanding of the local context and is sensitive to issues linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including SDG 2 (zero hunger), SDG 3 (good health and well-being), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) and SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production).

Since 2022, the company has been Fairtrade certified by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) and has obtained the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) certification from the SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance) following an audit.

In addition, Moringa Wave Sarl has a partnership with the Office National de Nutrition (ONN), which runs programmes around nutrition. The project with the ONN involves a series of educational activities targeting Malagasy consumers and producers. The company also distributes meals in schools to combat malnutrition.

Before the pandemic, the export market for Moringa Wave was 30% in 2019. The pandemic triggered a sudden drop, resulting in an almost non-existent export market in 2020 and a 90% local market.

Social and economic values is key in the management of this project. The choice of an organic production method and the interest in the environment is voluntary, allowing the competitive advantages of Madagascar's products, which are recognised as being free of pesticides and of good quality, to be maintained. The network of small local producers guarantees the origin of the ingredients while promoting the social development of the country.

Main achievements over the years:

  • 340 producers / 60 partner artisans to develop the craft industry / 12 employees
  • Construction of a new factory and import of new machinery from the EU, following the HACCP protocol
  • Since late 2022 and early 2023, the company has integrated two new supply chains: spices and handicrafts
  • On the production side, the company has obtained a grant from an organisation to consolidate its work with 10 COBAs (grassroots communities) to build their capacity and reduce pressure on the Menabe Antimena protected area
  • The company currently (end August 2023) has a project underway in the north of Madagascar with a new association of 60 people

How did the EPA help?

The increase in exports in 2021 has allowed the construction of a new factory at the Bevalala Training Centre and import of new machinery from the EU which is compliant with the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) protocol. The whole process was facilitated by the EPA.

The EPA has allowed Madagascar to maintain privileged access to the European markets for its products, duty free. Thus, the company benefited from 0% duty for Moringa oil, compared to 9.60% for third countries.

" .. the EPA has allowed Madagascar to maintain privileged access to the European markets for its products, which do not have to pay any customs duties..."
