De Schuman al COVID-19: Logros y retos de la Unión Europea
As part of the activities in the framework of #EuropeMonth and the 70th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, we organised this webinar with the Ambassadors of Belgium and Slovakia to Mexico, and the Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of Romania and the European Union to Mexico.
On May 28th, 2020, the Delegation of the European Union to Mexico organised the second webinar to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, “From Schuman to COVID-19: Achievements and Challenges of the EU”. Mr. Antoine Evrard, Ambassador of Belgium to Mexico, Mrs. Terézia Šajgalíková, Ambassador of Slovakia to Mexico, Mr. Ionuț Vâlcu, Chargé d’Affairs of Rumania, and Mr. Jean-Pierre Bou, Chargé d’Affairs of the EU Delegation to Mexico, participated in this webinar. Professor Beatriz Nadia Pérez Rodríguez from UAM Xochimilco moderated the dialogue.
The diplomatic representatives recalled the historical process of the EU by analysing its integration process and sharing their personal experiences in the formation of the European project. The European representatives gave specific examples of how their countries have become stronger as part of the EU. They covered specific cooperation programs such as Erasmus+ and the European Regional Development Fund, which have strengthened the economic and social cohesion in the European block. They also acknowledged the complexity of negotiation processes inside the EU, while recognising that cooperation is essential to address the current health and economic crises. The diplomats highlighted the importance of the relationship between Europe and Mexico in the global scenario and explained to the audience how the modernised Global Agreement encompasses much more comprehensive goals than just free trade.
