A Sold-Out Opening Night

The opening film, 22 Lengths — a German feature by director Mia Maariel Meyer and winner of the 2025 Hessian Film Award for Best Screen Production — drew an audience that filled every seat in Auditorium 3. With no seats remaining, audience members took to the staircase from the very first step, unwilling to miss a single frame. The enthusiasm carried into the late evening: by the time Bulgarian drama The Trap was set to screen at 21:30, a long queue had already formed outside the auditorium. The response from Ulaanbaatar's public on opening night signals an exceptional edition of the festival.

Beyond the Screen: Side Events and Capacity Building

This edition of the EUFF Mongolia goes well beyond cinema screenings, incorporating a substantial programme of capacity-building activities for Mongolia's emerging film community across three distinct side events.

CineLab Short Film Programme

A 40-hour online short film production training programme was successfully delivered ahead of the festival, attracting 12 participants. Eight films were selected to go forward to jury evaluation, with the best short film to be awarded at the festival's closing ceremony. The jury includes EU Ambassador H.E. Ina Marciulionyte.

The programme was led by two internationally experienced instructors. Rob Rombaut, documentary filmmaker and directing instructor based in Brussels, is a co-founder of DocNomads - an international documentary film education programme - and has taught at film schools across Europe and beyond, with his own documentary works earning recognition at international festivals. Javier Solano, Belgian-Ecuadorian filmmaker and coordinator of the MemoryLab association since 2017, has led documentary film training programmes across Central America, Cuba, Belgium, Azerbaijan, and Ecuador, mentoring emerging filmmakers in both fiction and documentary.

Participants are producing their short films under the theme "Your Own Brick" ("Өөрийн өрөг").

Director's Masterclass

On 22 June, festival guest Jessica Woodworth led an exclusive four-hour Director's Masterclass, offering Mongolia's filmmaking community a rare opportunity for direct engagement with an internationally recognized European director.

Actor Skills Development Programme

An open call was launched for a free five-day, 40-hour intensive acting training led by Jessica Woodworth. The programme covers acting on camera, character research and development, emotional expression, international acting techniques, improvisation, and director-actor collaboration. It is open to professional actors, theatre and film students, and anyone seeking to develop their craft to an international standard. Places are limited and allocated through an open selection process.

Strong Media Presence

Public visibility for the festival has been strong from the outset. The EUFF Mongolia 2026 was featured on Central TV's Daily Show, reaching a broad national audience ahead of the opening and generating significant public interest across the city.

About the Festival

Now in its latest edition, the European Film Festival Mongolia presents a curated selection of contemporary European cinema, offered entirely free of admission to the public. This year's programme spans 13 films from 13 countries, exploring themes including family relationships, adolescence, disability, environmental protection, social media, and self-discovery - a mirror of the issues shaping societies across the world today.

All screenings take place at Urgoo IMAX 3, Shangri-La Mall through 27 June 2026.
