EU Ambassador Maggiore presents his Credentials to Mozambican President Nyusi

The European Union and Mozambique share a long and strong relationship based on shared democratic values, commitments to sustainable and inclusive development. Both parties are committed to further advancing priority agendas on peace and security and the Global Gateway priority areas in Mozambique.

 

The Ambassador of the European Union, Antonino Maggiore, presented his credentials to the Mozambican President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, in Maputo, following his appointment by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell.

The ceremony took place at the President´s Office, in Maputo. At a short bilateral meeting with the President Filipe Nyusi, Ambassador Maggiore underlined the strong and multi-layered partnership between the EU and Mozambique and committed to further developing it in the political and economic fields. Ambassador Maggiore took the opportunity to congratulate Mozambique for its unanimous election as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for 2023-24, and expressed hopes that Mozambique will contribute to upholding a rules-based international order and multilateralism.

President Nyusi also highlighted the strong and multifaceted links between Mozambique and the EU, and praised EU´s significant support to Mozambique, particularly the work of EUTM Mozambique, the  provision of military equipment through the European Peace Facility as well as the work and commitment to the ongoing implementation of the DDR process, an important step in consolidating peace and stability.

Before his appointment to Mozambique, Antonino Maggiore served as the Italian Ambassador to Zambia, also to Malawi and was the Representative of Italy to the Organization of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

About the Ambassador

Ambassador Maggiore graduated in Law from the Catholic University “Sacro Cuore” of Milan. He joined the Diplomatic Service in 1999 and started his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy to working between 2002 and 2010 at the Italian Embassy in Beijing and in Ankara. From 2013, he was at the Permanent Representation at the EU in Brussels, initially as the organizational coordinator of the Italian Presidency of the EU Council in 2014.

In 2017, he joined the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the same year appointed to the Ministry where he was in charge of the coordination of the Presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Vienna that Italy held for a year, in 2018.

Antonino Maggiore holds the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He is married, with children.
