EU, Namibia celebrate 35 years of partnership

On Thursday, 15 May 2025, we celebrated Europe Day 2025 and 35 years of EU–Namibia relations: a partnership rooted in freedom, democracy and shared values.
The event highlighted the EU’s historic support for Namibia’s path to freedom, dating back to its involvement in the Western Contact Group and early humanitarian aid efforts. That spirit of solidarity has since evolved into a robust, values-based partnership.
This year’s celebrations took on special significance with the election of Namibia’s first female President and a predominantly female-led political leadership, an achievement closely aligned with the EU’s commitment to gender equality and inclusive governance.
A major focus was the growing strategic partnership on green hydrogen and critical raw materials. The HyIron Oshivela Project, recently inaugurated in Arandis, exemplifies the EU’s support for Namibia’s green industrialisation, under the Global Gateway initiative. With substantial financial backing from the EU and Member States, this partnership is positioning Namibia as a global leader in the green economy.
Beyond energy, the EU is actively supporting Namibia in early childhood education, technical and vocational training, gender-based violence prevention, and anti-corruption efforts. Trade relations continue to thrive, with the EU serving as Namibia’s largest export market and a partner in fair, rules-based trade.
Cultural highlights included a performance by soulful Erna Chimu & band, delicious Kapana by Master Chef Mandume Hasheni, spit braai by Namibia Smoked Meat and beverages sponsored by NBL (part of Heineken Company). Also beautiful displays by Namibian crafters, showcasing products developed during the recently concluded EU-funded Craft Development workshop, added a unique cultural touch in celebrating Namibia’s rich heritage.
The evening reaffirmed the strength of EU–Namibia ties and our shared commitment to democracy, sustainability, and multilateral cooperation. As global challenges grow, the EU remains committed to turning them into opportunities, together with Namibia.
