Europe Day in Namibia, emphasises green hydrogen partnership

Europe Day is observed annually on May 9th in honour of Europe's peace and unity. The day marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman Declaration' that set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

On 14 May, the EU Delegation to Namibia and its member states hosted Europe Day under the inspiring theme: Year of Skills at the EU Residence in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city. The celebration was attended by among others, the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Hon. Jenelly Matundu, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society, development partners and friends of Europe.

At the occasion, EU Ambassador to Namibia, H.E. Ana Beatriz Martins explained that Europe Day holds significant importance in Europe’s history. “On this day, we commemorate the Declaration made by the then French foreign minister Robert Schuman. A vision that laid the foundations for what the European Union of 27 Member States is today. The values of solidarity, peace and security, democracy and human rights continue to guide our actions and aspirations. The European Union remains committed to these principles, to secure the prosperity of its own citizens and of our partners,” she explained.

Europe Day highlighted the strong 34 years of EU-Namibia cooperation, focusing on inclusive green growth and sustainable development. Emphasising on joint efforts to fight climate change, Ambassador Martins said: “The EU sets itself the ambitious goal of becoming the first climate neutral continent by 2050, while Namibia embarks on its path for a green industrialisation. This shared objective of accelerating sustainable and inclusive green growth is at the core of the EU-Namibia Partnership. And Namibia is a true ally when it comes to advancing the transition to a green and just economy.”

Ambassador concluding by reiterating EU’s unwavering commitment to continue forging a vibrant relation with Namibia, based on partnership and shared values that benefits our peoples on both continents. “As we celebrate Europe Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a world where peace, democracy and civil liberties prevail.”

During the month of May 2024, the EU delegation plans to commission two murals in Namibia’s capital city, and host lectures at local universities, under the heading: “Bridging Continents: The EU's history and evolution, and our partnership with Namibia for a green industrialisation”.
