EU helps in making beauty and history of Heraclea accessible to all

Heraclea Lyncestis, one of the oldest and most significant archaeological sites in North Macedonia, has been attracting tourists for years. But not everyone could enjoy fully the mesmerising beauty and intriguing stories of the ancient ruins near Bitola - until recently.

Thanks to the EU-funded project ‘Smart-Cul-Tour’, Heraclea is now accessible to people with disabilities – a lift and a ramp allow them to access the amphitheatre, which is the heart of Heraclea and a venue for many events, as well as the lookout. Thanks to the project now there is also a multi-language audio guide - through a smart phone app, visitors from around the world can have better insights into the history and importance of the place – in English, French, German, Italian and Polish, in addition to Macedonian and Albanian. The available equipment for virtual and augmented reality revives for them the original look of the place. And the so-called Roman Road, a section of the once famous Via Egnatia, is now reconstructed with cobblestones – to remind tourists more of how it would have looked when Heraclea Lyncestis was in its heyday.

‘Smart-Cul-Tour’ is a project under the EU’s Cross Border Cooperation Programme between North Macedonia and Albania – in this case, between the regions of Pelagonija and Korça. Its goal is to promote tourism, the protection of cultural and natural heritage, and cross border exchange of experience and good practices. All this while supporting local businesses and encouraging the youth to play an active role in the process.

On the side of Albania, the project helped the reconstruction of an old school building and establishment of a museum honouring writer Sterjo Spasse in the village of Globocani, in the Municipality of Pustec.
