Join the online discussion on the implementation of the EU Action Plan in Asia and the Pacific

The European Union has recently adopted the Action Plan for Human Rights and Democracy 2020-2024. The Action Plan sets out the EU’s priorities and objectives which will guide our work in advancing human rights and democracy, including in Asia and the Pacific.

In light of the EU’s commitment to work hand in hand with partners and civil society all around the world, we would like to invite you to participate in the online discussion on the implementation of the EU Action Plan in Asia and the Pacific. This is part of a series of regional events to stimulate in-depth exchange on some of the human rights and democracy challenges in the region, as well as on the possible contribution of joint regional and EU efforts in addressing them.

The EU Special Representative for Human Rights Mr Eamon Gilmore will deliver a key note speech on the Action Plan and its geopolitical context. Ms Paola Pampaloni, Deputy Managing Director for Asia and Pacific at the EEAS, will welcome participants. Ms Yuyun Wahyuningrum, Representative of Indonesia to the  ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights will moderate the discussion. The panellists are:

H.E. Ms Rensje Teerink: Head of EU Delegation to Bangladesh and former Head of EU Delegation to Nepal; specialised in Asian studies.

Ms Sarah Brooks: Programme Director at the International Service for Human Rights; focused on human rights defenders in the Asian region as well as defenders of migrant and refugee rights.

Mr Charles Santiago: Member of the Parliament in Malaysia and Chair of the Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs Select Committee; Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Parliamentarians for Human Rights;

Chairperson/ Commissioner of a National Human Rights Institution (TBC).

You will be invited to ask questions to the panellists; in fact, you can already submit your questions in the registration form! Panellists will respond to them in the time available.
