The European Union and Papua New Guinea have walked a long way togetherโฆThe European Union started in 1957 with six Member States, today we are 27 countries that have joined politically and economically. Since 1977, the European Union has been present in Papua New Guinea with a diplomatic mission established in Port Moresby and through the different programmes the EU has shaped with its PNG partners, funded and supported all over the country.
Since its establishment in the country, the European Union has granted Papua New Guinea some 6 billion Kina in various
areas โ Health, Water and Sanitation (WaSH), Education including Technical and Vocational Training, ResearchโฆCurrently, our focus lies with Forestry, Climate Change and Biodiversity, sustainable economic development , WaSH and promotion of good governance. Additional support is provided through dedicated thematic programmes on key issues such as gender
equality and womenโs empowerment, as well as through contributions to civil society organisations.
We are already jointly shaping upcoming large-scale investments in Papua New Guinea in the maritime transport and water supply sector, as part of the โGlobal Gateway Strategyโ. Global Gateway is the EU's positive offer to reduce the worldwide investment disparity and boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems.
The European Union is proud of the reliable, solid and diversified partnership that we jointly built over the years. Not only
are we development and cooperation partners, but we are also trading partners, firmly rooted in the Economic Partnership
Agreement signed in 2009, the first of this kind in the region. Last but not least, we are partners engaged in much needed
political dialogue to address all questions of shared interest, notably of regional or global relevance.
